Punk Rock Bourgeoisie:
A tribute to the façade of sophistication, wealth, philanthropy and its
fashion.
A maze of décor and art exploring aesthetic, its power, meaning and role
in society.
Throughout human history, decadent and lavish aesthetics have been used to convey
messages of power and social and intellectual superiority.
Today this message is used in complex ways in consumer society and social politics. This aesthetic is what we are taught to work for, it becomes
our identity in the form of the objects we buy from clothes to wallpaper. The masses are even lead to believe that if they buy types of products that they
are contributing to a philanthropic or environmental cause. It has become increasingly fashionable to be politically conscious among the middle and upper
class, but at the same time they still tend to live a lifestyle that negates the very cause they believe they are contributing to remedy.
The aim in this installation was to bring together the decadent and rich décor elements that are left over from high points in history such as Baroque,
Rococo and Victorian and allow them to be juxtaposed with a slight reminder of the fragility of being organic creatures. The maze is utilized as a physical
metaphor for the absurdity of excess, with room after room filled with art and objects. The entire installation was built with found and reused materials and
the structure itself from discarded commercial sets in the Miami area.
Blair Butterfield received her degree in Fine Art from the University of the
Arts, Central Saint Martins in London.
